(Charlotte Ricker, entry level scratchboard)
Scratchboard was originally introduced for the printing industry as an alternative to woodcut and metal engraving in the 19th century. Through 1950s a large number of newspaper, magazine and scientific illustrations were done in this medium. The effects of scratchboard can be dramatic and powerful, but also delicate and precise. Last weekend our students were discovering its advantages and drawbacks in an entry level workshop. You can see more images from this workshop by clicking here.
